7 Tips for a Flawless Finish with 2K Automotive Paint

7 Tips for a Flawless Finish with 2K Automotive Paint

2K acrylic paints and clear coats cure chemically with a hardener to form a glossy, durable surface. What turns a quality product into a flawless result is application discipline.

1. Stick exactly to the mixing ratio

Paint, hardener and thinner should be prepared at the ratio given in the technical data sheet, preferably with a graduated mixing cup or a scale. Too much hardener makes the surface brittle; too little impairs curing.

2. Keep track of pot life

The reaction begins the moment the mixture is prepared. Material past its pot life causes flow and adhesion problems; prepare only as much as you need.

3. Sand the surface correctly

Use the right grit for each layer and progress gradually. Coarse scratches will show through the paint.

4. Fight silicone and dust

Before painting, wipe the surface with a silicone remover and do a final clean with a tack cloth. Clean booth filters greatly reduce dust-related defects.

5. Set up the gun correctly

Use the nozzle size and pressure recommended by the manufacturer. Hold the gun perpendicular to the surface at a constant distance, overlapping each pass by about half of the previous one.

6. Respect flash-off times between coats

Wait for the recommended flash-off time before applying the next coat. A rushed coat can cause runs and pinholes.

7. Don't neglect personal protection

2K hardeners contain isocyanates. Suitable respiratory protection, gloves and protective overalls must be worn during application, and the area must be well ventilated.
