Epoxy Group
Epoxy-based primer, intermediate and topcoat systems for surfaces that demand high chemical and mechanical resistance.
Components
Two-component (resin + hardener)
Application
Brush, roller, airless spray
Environment
Interior and sheltered exterior surfaces
What is the Epoxy Group?
Epoxy paints are two-component (2K) systems that cure chemically when the epoxy resin is mixed with a hardener. The hard, dense film formed after curing adheres very strongly to metal and concrete and offers excellent resistance to chemicals, oils and abrasion.
Thanks to these properties, epoxies are widely used as primers and intermediate coats in the corrosion protection of steel structures, and as topcoats on factory and warehouse floors. Because epoxy can chalk and yellow over time on exterior surfaces exposed directly to sunlight, it is usually protected with a polyurethane topcoat.
Key Features
- High adhesion to metal and concrete
- Chemical resistance to acids, alkalis and oils
- Abrasion and impact resistance
- Solvent-based, solvent-free and water-based options
- Barrier protection with high film thickness
- Easy-to-clean hygienic surface
Protection layer by layer
Epoxy Primer
On metal, zinc phosphate or zinc-rich epoxy primers form the first layer of protection against corrosion; on concrete, a penetrating primer consolidates the surface.
Epoxy Intermediate Coat
A high-solids intermediate coat increases film thickness and acts as a barrier that delays moisture and oxygen from reaching the surface.
Topcoat
Epoxy topcoats are used indoors; on sun-exposed exterior surfaces a polyurethane topcoat that retains color and gloss is preferred.
Where is it used?
The right start, a long life
- 01
Steel surfaces must be free of oil and dirt and, where possible, blast-cleaned to Sa 2½ according to ISO 8501-1.
- 02
Concrete must have cured for at least 28 days and be dry and sound; laitance should be removed by grinding or shot blasting.
- 03
Dust, rust and loose old paint on the surface must be removed completely.
What to watch out for during application
- 01
Resin and hardener must be mixed homogeneously with a mechanical mixer at the ratio given in the technical data sheet.
- 02
The mixture must be used within the specified pot life.
- 03
Ambient and surface temperatures must comply with the manufacturer's recommendations and stay above the dew point during application.
Mixing ratio, pot life and recoat intervals vary by product; the product's technical data sheet should always be used for exact values.
