Overview

What is the Synthetic and Cellulosic Furniture Paints Group?

Furniture paints are used to give surfaces such as solid wood, MDF and chipboard an attractive finish and to protect them against moisture, scratches and soiling. This group covers two main systems: synthetic (alkyd-based) paints and cellulosic (nitrocellulose-based) paints.

Cellulosic paints dry very quickly, sand easily and form a thin, smooth film, which is why furniture workshops prefer them for series production and touch-up work. Synthetic paints dry more slowly but build a full, glossy and flexible film, and are widely used on doors, window joinery and general woodwork. The group includes primers, fillers, coloured topcoats, clear varnishes and the matching thinners.

Surface Preparation

The right start, a long life

  1. 01

The wood surface must be dry, clean and dust-free, with an appropriate moisture content.

  2. 02

Smooth the surface with progressively finer grades of sandpaper.

  3. 03

On previously painted surfaces, remove loose paint and sand sound paint to a matt finish.

Application Notes

What to watch out for during application

  1. 01

Thin cellulosic products with cellulosic thinner and synthetic products with synthetic thinner; the thinners must not be interchanged.

  2. 02

Observe the drying time recommended by the manufacturer between coats and sand lightly between them.

  3. 03

Cellulosic products contain flammable solvents; apply in a well-ventilated area away from sources of ignition.

Mixing ratio, pot life and recoat intervals vary by product; the product's technical data sheet should always be used for exact values.
